Limit Hold em is one of my favorite variants of Hold em for a couple of very important reasons.
1. Its VERY mechanical. The way limit hold em is played is pretty much just like a job. Unlike No Limit Hold em, you are not going to be faced with INDIVIDUAL big decisions for alot of money, the nature of the game is patience and a long view type of vision into the game. If your disciplined and your properly taught the math of the game, there is literaly no way your going to end up losing money at Limit Holdem.
2. It doesnt have the hype of NL holdem. So if you agree with me on number one up above, seeing as how there isnt as many people with all the little tricks your going to find people know about at NL holdem, there are alot of relatively clueless people at limit holdem tables online from the $5/$10 level and down. Even though this is true, there is still at least five-eight full table limit hold em games running online almost all the time, ready for you to jump into.
Now that that is said, lets talk about a few winning strategies at Limit.
Just like the what I was talking about on my Sit N Go link the cardinal rule of any type of poker AND LIMIT ESPECIALLY is understanding money management. At all times for every table you are playing at, if you are going to be taking a professional approach to the game, you need at least 100 big BETS. That is minimum, I usually have around 200-300 Big Bets per table that I play at. The easiest way to explain why this is so important is that since we are dealing with an investment structure that has alot of VARIANCE you will see dips in your bankroll and jumps in your bankroll. This is due to players getting "lucky" against you. But if you find yourself putting bets into the pot with the best hand the MAJORITY OF THE TIME (not necessarily everytime, because you can get lucky to :) ) you will make money. Its a simple concept, if someone chases with a hand they shouldnt, which happens ALL the time at the lower limits, they are investing money badly. They have a negative expectation on their investment, and you will have a positive one. Now that one hand, and maybe even the next two just like it you may loose, but if you stick to your strategies, you will win money because you will win in those situations most of the time. BUT, since you will get unlucky from time to time you will lose a couple hands where you were a favorite. Hence, you need 100-300 big bets for the stakes your playing, with that kind of bankroll, you will be ok getting unlucky every once in a while, you can weather the storm, play another day and then reap the rewards when the math comes through for you and you win in those situations, which you just simply will. The numbers never lie in the long run.
A Program I recomend for any new or even experienced limit player is "pokerstove". Just Google it, its an absolutely FREE program that calculates the percentage of times you will win versus a single hand or an entire range of hands (alot of different hand possibilities you may be up against.) play with that a little bit, and you can develop a sense of where you stand versus the hands you may be up against, and how many times you will win against them with certain hands you may have.
TIGHT IS RIGHT. There are many nuances to understanding very strong limit poker, but nearly every single one of them stem from this concept. The General idea is for you to win more money than you lose betting, and to make your opponents lose more money than they win on hands. The first and usual way you will accomplish this task is by playing fewer hands than your opponents, waiting for bigger hands. Now, that alone isnt all you need to win a number of bets at this game, but it should be enough to make a little here and there at the smallest stakes, say from $3/$6 and down. I do recomend developing an aggressive idea about how to attack weaker players or spots that you can make a bet and win the pot or just the blinds, because finding ways that work to get those extra pots really make a difference in the long run, but, as a beginer I cant stress enough how you really just should stick to basics and wait for your opponents to fumble. They usually do.
There are a few limit books I really recommend for any somewhat experienced limit player, if this variant of poker interest you give me an email and I would be happy to give you links to them. Im also happy to hear about a hand and give you some advice from time to time, provided you sign up on one of the poker sites shown on my site.
Best of Luck at the tables.
